For most trips to Bali, the best eSIM is a fixed-data plan of 5 to 10 GB: ICY SIM was the cheapest in our check at about A$17 for 10 GB (US$12), then Nomad (A$27) and Airalo (A$30). If you stream or work online every day, an unlimited plan from Holafly or Saily costs more but saves you counting. Either way it’s far cheaper than roaming: a week in Bali on the Telstra Day Pass is $70.

Roaming keeps your Australian number working for calls, which an eSIM doesn’t. But you can have both: keep your SIM in for texts and use the eSIM for data. Full details in our guides to Telstra, Optus and Vodafone roaming.

eSIM or a local SIM at Denpasar airport?

You can buy a local tourist SIM at Ngurah Rai airport or in town, and it can be good value for long stays. You’ll need your passport to register it, you lose your Australian SIM slot while it’s in (unless your phone has two), and you’re buying it after a long flight. A travel eSIM is set up before you leave home and works the moment you land.

Which Bali eSIM should you pick?

  • Cheapest for a normal holiday: a 5 GB or 10 GB fixed plan. ICY SIM was lowest in our check, Nomad second.
  • Streaming every day or working online: an unlimited plan from Saily or Holafly, or a 20 GB fixed plan (ICY SIM about A$28).
  • Bali plus Lombok or the Gili Islands: any Indonesia plan covers them, as they’re in the same country.
