Yes — a travel eSIM works in Turkey, on the country’s national networks. The one Turkey-specific rule: install and activate it before you fly. In July 2025 Turkey’s telecom regulator blocked access to several eSIM providers’ websites and apps, so buying or installing an eSIM from inside Turkey may not work.
- Turkey has three networks: Turkcell, Türk Telekom and Vodafone. Our Turkey eSIM uses Türk Telekom.
- Install before you go — eSIM provider sites and apps were blocked in Turkey in July 2025.
- Visiting for under 120 days? You don’t need to register your phone’s IMEI.
- All three operators launched 5G in April 2026 in every provincial centre.
- Social media has been throttled or blocked at times — keep offline maps and key bookings saved.
Which networks will your eSIM use in Turkey?
Turkey has three mobile operators — Turkcell (the largest, about 39 million subscribers), Türk Telekom (about 31 million) and Vodafone Türkiye (about 29 million), according to regulator figures for late 2025. All three launched commercial 5G on 1 April 2026 across all 81 provincial centres, with nationwide rollout planned over about two years. Our Turkey eSIM connects to Türk Telekom.

Why you should install your eSIM before you fly
On 10–11 July 2025, Turkey’s regulator (BTK) blocked access to the websites and apps of several eSIM providers, including some of the biggest names. Reports since then say eSIMs already installed before arrival keep working on roaming, but buying, installing or topping up from inside Turkey can fail. We couldn’t confirm whether those blocks are still in place, so the safe approach is simple: buy, install and test your eSIM at home.
- Buy your Turkey plan — or a Middle East plan if Turkey is one stop of several — before your trip.
- Install it at home on Wi-Fi. Validity starts on first use, so installing early costs you nothing.
- Choose a plan big enough for the whole trip, so you don’t need to top up from inside Turkey.
- When you land, set the eSIM as your mobile data line and turn on data roaming for it.
Do tourists need to register their phone (IMEI)?
Not for a normal holiday. Turkey lets phones brought from abroad work without registration for 120 days. After that, the phone has to be registered through the government’s e-Devlet system — for a fee of around 54,000 Turkish lira in 2026 — or it gets blocked on Turkish networks. If you’re staying under four months, you can ignore this.
Blocked sites and social media
Turkey has restricted online services at times. Wikipedia was blocked from 2017 until early 2020, Instagram was blocked for nine days in August 2024, and Freedom House’s 2025 report describes social media being throttled for hours during major political events. Most of the time everything works normally — but keep offline maps, tickets and hotel details saved on your phone so a slowdown never leaves you stuck.
Coverage: Istanbul, Cappadocia and the coast
- Istanbul: excellent coverage across the city. Istanbul Airport (IST) and Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) are among Europe’s busiest — switch your eSIM on as you land.
- Cappadocia: good 4G in towns like Göreme and Ürgüp; expect weaker spots deep in the valleys on hikes.
- Antalya and the coast: strong in resorts and towns; coves and boat trips can drop to weaker signal.

eSIM vs a Turkish tourist SIM
| Travel eSIM | Turkish tourist SIM | |
|---|---|---|
| Where to get it | Online, before you fly | Airport dealers or operator stores |
| Paperwork | None | Passport |
| Example | Türk Telekom network, 5 GB / 30 days: $5 (ICY SIM) | Türk Telekom 10 GB / 7 days: 320 TL |
| Local number | No (data-only) | Yes, on some packs |
| Your home SIM | Stays in your phone | Taken out |
A tourist SIM can be good value for long stays or if you need a Turkish number. For a normal holiday, an eSIM saves the airport queue and keeps your home number working for bank codes. Prices checked 8 October 2026.
How much data do you need in Turkey?
| Trip | Typical use | Plan size |
|---|---|---|
| Long weekend in Istanbul | Maps, messaging, ride apps | 1–3 GB |
| One week, Istanbul + Cappadocia | + photos and social media | 5 GB |
| Two weeks including the coast | + video calls, hotspot | 10–20 GB |
