The cheapest international eSIM is usually not an “international” plan at all — it’s a plan for the country or region you’re actually visiting. Global eSIMs cover 80–180 countries, and you pay for that coverage: 5 GB on a global plan cost $21.99–50 in our check, while 5 GB for a single country like Japan, France or Thailand cost $6 on a country plan. A global plan only becomes the cheap option when your trip crosses several continents.
ICY SIM is our own product and appears below — including where it isn’t the cheapest (our Global plan). Prices were checked on 12 October 2026 on the esimDB price tracker (data updated 6 October) and providers’ own pages. They change often.
- One country: a country plan is cheapest — about $1–2.50 per GB on the cheaper providers.
- Several countries in one region: a regional plan (e.g. Europe or Asia) is usually cheaper than a global one.
- Several continents: a global plan saves buying many eSIMs. Cheapest we found: MobiMatter for small amounts, Maya Mobile for unlimited ($19.99 for 7 days).
- Buy the smallest plan that fits and top up — most travellers use 150–500 MB a day.
- The very cheapest unknown brands are tempting; check the network list, refund rules and reviews first.
What “cheapest international eSIM” really means
People search for an “international eSIM” when they mean two different things: a travel eSIM for one trip abroad (any eSIM that works outside your home country), or one eSIM that works in many countries at once (a global plan). The cheapest answer is different for each — so start with where you’re going.
| Your trip | Cheapest type of plan | Example (ICY SIM, 12 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| One country | Country plan | Japan, France or Thailand: 5 GB / 30 days for $6 |
| Several countries in Europe | Regional plan | Europe (30 countries): 10 GB / 30 days for $22 |
| Several countries in Asia | Regional plan | Asia (20 countries): 5 GB / 30 days for $14 |
| Several continents | Global plan | See the global comparison below |

Cheapest global eSIM plans compared
Global plans from the main providers, checked 12 October 2026 (prices before any promo codes):
| Provider | Smallest plan | ~5 GB | ~10 GB | Countries |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MobiMatter (Europe, Asia & USA) | 1 GB / 14 days: $3.99 | 5 GB / 30 days: $11.49 | 10 GB / 30 days: $19.99 | 80 |
| MobiMatter (Discover Global) | 1 GB / 7 days: $6.99 | 5 GB / 30 days: $21.99 | 10 GB / 30 days: $35.99 | 155 |
| GigSky (World Lite) | 1 GB / 15 days: $6.99 | 5 GB / 15 days: $24.99 | 10 GB / 60 days: $44.99 | 119 |
| Airalo (Discover) | 1 GB / 7 days: $8.50 | 5 GB / 60 days: $35 | 10 GB / 180 days: $57 | ~160 |
| Saily | 1 GB / 7 days: $8.99 | 5 GB / 30 days: $29.99 | 10 GB / 30 days: $44.99 | 121 |
| Yesim | — | 5 GB / 30 days: $26.89 | 10 GB / 30 days: $32.49 | 83–147 |
| Ubigi (Best World) | 500 MB / 30 days: $5 | — | 10 GB / 30 days: $39 | 178 |
| Nomad | 1 GB / 7 days: $12 | 5 GB / 30 days: $40 | 10 GB / 30 days: $62 | 123 |
| ICY SIM (Global) | 1 GB / 7 days: $15 | 5 GB / 30 days: $50 | 10 GB / 30 days: $90 | 180 |
Two things jump out. First, the cheapest global plans cover fewer countries — MobiMatter’s $19.99 10 GB plan covers 80, not 150+. Check that every country on your route is included. Second, our own Global plan is one of the most expensive here; we’d only suggest it if you need its 180-country coverage. For one country or one region, our country and regional plans are where we’re cheap.
Cheapest unlimited international eSIM
| Provider | 3 days | 7 days | 30 days | Full-speed allowance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maya Mobile | $9.99 | $19.99 | $49.99 | 5 GB a day, then 3 Mbps |
| Airalo (Discover Unlimited) | $24 | $45 | $159 | 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps |
| Holafly (Global) | $24.90 | $46.90 | $161.50 | Fair use; hotspot 1 GB a day |
| Jetpac | $17.50 | $40.50 | $174 | 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps |
Maya Mobile was by far the cheapest global unlimited plan in our check, covering 178 countries. “Unlimited” almost always means a daily full-speed allowance and slower data after it — fine for maps and messaging, less fine for video calls once you pass the limit.
Country plan vs global plan: real trip examples
| Trip | Country / regional plans | Cheapest global option |
|---|---|---|
| 10 days in Japan, ~5 GB | Japan 5 GB: $6 | MobiMatter 5 GB: $11.49 |
| 2 weeks: Thailand + Vietnam + Japan, ~10 GB | Asia 10 GB: $25 | MobiMatter 10 GB: $19.99 (80 countries — check yours) or $35.99 |
| 2 weeks: Italy + France + Spain, ~10 GB | Europe 10 GB: $22 | MobiMatter 10 GB: $19.99 or Yesim $32.49 |
| A month: USA, Mexico, Japan, Thailand, heavy use | Four separate plans | Maya unlimited 30 days: $49.99 |
Country and regional prices are ICY SIM’s, from our destinations page on 12 October 2026; global prices from the tables above. The lesson: for one country, a country plan wins easily; across a whole region, regional and the cheapest global plans are close; across continents with heavy use, a global unlimited plan is hard to beat.
How to pay the least for international data
- Buy for the countries you visit, not for the whole world — a country plan or a regional plan.
- Pick the smallest plan that fits. Maps, messaging and email use roughly 150–500 MB a day; see how much data you need.
- Top up instead of overbuying. Most apps let you add data to the same eSIM.
- Use Wi-Fi for big downloads — offline maps, podcasts and app updates before you leave the hotel.
- Check when validity starts. Plans that start on first use (ours do) let you install early without wasting days.
- Skip unlimited unless you need it. A week of unlimited costs about the same as 10–20 GB of fixed data on cheaper providers.

Are the very cheapest eSIMs worth it?
Price trackers list little-known brands with global plans for under $2. Some are fine; some aren’t. Before you buy from a brand you’ve never heard of, check four things: which local networks it uses in your destination, what happens if it doesn’t work (refund or credit), real reviews from the last few months, and whether the plan’s country list really includes every stop.
Can you get a free international eSIM?
Not really for a whole trip. A few providers offer small free trials — GigSky listed a free 100 MB / 3-day World plan in our check — which is enough to test the connection or order a taxi, not much more. Some phone plans include roaming abroad, so check yours: if it includes your destination, you may not need an eSIM at all.
Setting up a cheap travel eSIM

Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, then turn it on when you land: set it as your mobile data line and switch on data roaming for the eSIM only. Your home number keeps working for calls and texts. Full steps in our installation guide.
